Welcome to a joyful exploration of yoga! In this blog, we’ll highlight five energizing poses from my recent YouTube video Total Body JOY: Stretch, Strength & Energize [Fun Yoga!]. These poses will boost your mood, help you embrace self-love, and brighten your day. Check out the fun physical, mental, and emotional benefits – all designed to bring joy into your life. Whoo hoo!

Let’s take a look at each pose and discover how it can increase your joy and connection to yourself.

Crescent Lunge (Anjaneyasana)

From a standing position, step one foot back, bending your front knee and keeping your back leg straight. Raise your arms overhead, reaching your fingertips towards the sky. Keep your hips square and sink deeper into the lunge as you breathe.

Benefits:

  • Physical: Stretches the hips, strengthens the legs, and opens the chest and shoulders.
  • Mental: Increases focus and balance, creating a sense of determination.
  • Emotional: Invites feelings of expansion and empowerment, helping you open your heart to new possibilities.

How to Increase Joy:

Crescent Lunge is all about reaching for the sky, expanding both physically and mentally. Imagine your body opening up to receive joy and abundance. As you stretch upward, feel yourself growing stronger with every breath. Swami Satchidananda said, “The goal of life is happiness, peace, and joy.” Use this pose to feel that joy flow through your body, filling you with positivity and hope.

Chair Pose Twist (Parivrtta Utkatasana)

How to Do It:

Start in Chair Pose with knees bent, as if sitting back into an invisible chair. Bring your hands to prayer position at your heart and twist to the right, hooking your left elbow outside your right knee. Keep your knees aligned and lengthen through the spine as you twist.

Benefits:

  • Physical: Strengthens the legs, core, and arms while increasing spinal flexibility.
  • Mental: Improves concentration and enhances detoxification.
  • Emotional: Helps release stuck emotions and promotes a sense of inner balance.

How to Increase Joy:

Chair Pose Twist invites you to detox both physically and emotionally, twisting out tension and negativity. As you rotate, imagine letting go of anything holding you back, and making space for joy to enter your life. As yogi B.K.S. Iyengar said, “Yoga allows you to find a new kind of freedom that you may not have known even existed.” In this twist, find freedom from stress and allow joy to take its place.

Side Plank Pose (Vasisthasana)

How to Do It:

From a high plank position, shift your weight onto your right hand and the outer edge of your right foot. Stack your left foot on top of your right and lift your left arm toward the sky. Engage your core as you open your chest, keeping your body in a straight line. Gaze upward toward your raised hand, feeling the strength and balance in the pose.

Benefits:

  • Physical: Strengthens the arms, core, and legs, while improving balance and stability.
  • Mental: Sharpens focus and enhances concentration, grounding you in the present moment.
  • Emotional: Builds inner strength and confidence as you balance, promoting a sense of resilience and empowerment.

How to Increase Joy:

Side Plank is all about strength and balance. As you lift your body and reach upward, imagine yourself rising above your challenges and embracing joy with each breath. Visualize your worries falling away as you balance between strength and grace. Just as Eckhart Tolle says, “Realize deeply that the present moment is all you ever have,” focus fully on this moment. Be present, feel the joy of stability, and let your heart radiate confidence and happiness.

Bow Pose (Dhanurasana)

How to Do It

Lie on your stomach, bend your knees, and reach your hands back to grab your ankles. As you inhale, lift your chest and legs off the ground, pulling your feet towards the sky and opening your heart. Gaze forward and breathe deeply.

Benefits

  • Physical: Stretches the entire front body, strengthens the back, and improves posture.
  • Mental: Enhances concentration and stimulates the nervous system.
  • Emotional: Opens the heart to vulnerability, joy, and self-love.

How to Increase Joy:

Bow Pose is a beautiful heart-opener, allowing you to stretch beyond your limits and welcome joy into your life. As you lift your chest, imagine yourself opening up to love, compassion, and happiness. Yogi Bhajan said, “Happiness is your birthright. Live it!” In this pose, feel your heart expand with joy, knowing that happiness is always available to you.

Seated Wide-Legged Forward Fold (Upavistha Konasana)

How to Do It:

Sit with your legs extended wide apart. Inhale to lengthen your spine, and as you exhale, hinge forward from your hips, reaching your hands towards your feet or the floor in front of you. Keep your back long and breathe into the stretch.

Benefits:

  • Physical: Stretches the hamstrings, inner thighs, and lower back.
  • Mental: Calms the mind and encourages introspection.
  • Emotional: Promotes relaxation, acceptance, and inner peace.

How to Increase Joy

Seated Wide-Legged Forward Fold is a gentle yet deep pose that invites you to turn inward and reflect. As you fold forward, feel yourself letting go of stress and finding peace within. Rumi’s words, “When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy,” perfectly capture the essence of this pose. Embrace the stillness, and let joy flow through you like a river as you stretch.

Are you ready to dive into the JOY of Yoga?

These five yoga poses from the “Flow into Joy” practice will guide you on a journey to positivity, self-love, and joy. By focusing on your breath and body in each pose, you can deepen your connection to the present moment and allow joy to naturally arise within you.

Remember it doesn’t have to be or feel complicated. See if you can grab onto the feeling of ease and simplicity. Each pose makes you feel something in this flow, but how can you simplify it in your own mind?

As Paramahansa Yogananda said, “Be as simple as you can be; you will be astonished to see how uncomplicated and happy your life can become.” Through yoga, simplicity, and mindfulness, joy will effortlessly flow into your life.

Take a deep breath, smile, and let these poses bring joy into your day!
