Let me paint a picture for you.
It’s 2 PM, I’ve got a toddler hanging off my leg, a deadline looming, and my third cup of coffee is doing absolutely nothing. Sound familiar? If you’re nodding along, stick with me, because I’m about to share my secret weapon for getting through those energy-sapping days.
Before I had my little ball of energy (aka Ezra), I thought I knew what being tired was. Ha! Turns out, I had no idea. These days, I’m constantly on the lookout for ways to boost my energy that don’t involve mainlining espresso or falling asleep at my desk.
Enter Pranayama
Enter pranayama – fancy yoga speak for “breathing practices that will make you feel like you just took the world’s most effective power nap.”
Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Breathing? Really, Celestial? I do that all day!” Trust me, I was skeptical too. But these aren’t your average inhale-exhale cycles. These are the yoga equivalent of hitting the refresh button on your brain and body.
Ready to give it a shot? Here are my four go-to pranayama techniques that have quite literally saved my sanity (and my productivity):
- Kapalabhati (The “Wake Up and Smell the Coffee” Breath)
This one’s like a gentle alarm clock for your body. It clears out the cobwebs and gives you a nice little energy boost.
How to do it:
- Sit comfortably (no judgment if that means on the couch with Paw Patrol in the background)
- Take a deep breath in
- Now, exhale forcefully through your nose while pulling your belly button towards your spine
- Let your inhale happen naturally, then exhale forcefully again
- Keep this going for 1-2 minutes
Start slow – no need to hyperventilate! Build up gradually and you’ll be a pro in no time.
- Bhastrika (The “I Don’t Need Caffeine” Breath)
This one’s a real energy kickstarter. It’s like pressing the gas pedal on your metabolism and giving your nervous system a gentle wake-up call.
How to do it:
- Sit up straight (channel your inner yogi)
- Inhale deeply through your nose
- Exhale forcefully, letting your belly expand
- Inhale forcefully, filling those lungs right up
- Keep this rapid, powerful breathing going for 1-2 minutes
Remember: Both your inhales and exhales should be deep and strong. Think “enthusiastic dragon” and you’ve got the right idea!
- Ujjayi (The “I Am Calm and Focused” Breath)
Time to channel your inner Darth Vader! This breath is amazing for focus and energy, plus it’s oddly soothing. It’s my go-to when I’m trying to meet a deadline while simultaneously preventing my toddler from redecorating the walls with crayon.
How to do it:
- Sit comfortably, spine straight
- Breathe in through your nose, slightly tightening the back of your throat. You should hear a soft ocean-like sound
- Breathe out the same way, keeping that gentle sound going
Aim for 5-10 minutes if you can. It’s like a mini-meditation that won’t put you to sleep!
- Anulom Vilom (The “Restore My Sanity” Breath)
This is my secret weapon for those days when everything feels out of whack. It balances your energy, gives your lungs a workout, and clears your mind like nothing else.
How to do it:
- Sit comfortably (you’re a pro at this by now)
- Use your right thumb to close your right nostril
- Inhale deeply through your left nostril
- Now, use your right ring finger to close your left nostril, and release your right nostril
- Exhale slowly through your right nostril
- Inhale deeply through your right nostril
- Close your right nostril, open your left
- Exhale slowly through your left nostril
Repeat this cycle for 5-10 minutes. It’s like a reset button for your brain!
So there you have it – my not-so-secret weapons for getting through the day without face-planting into my keyboard. Give these a try and let me know how they work for you!
